First things first, the installation

As we could expect, it is really simple. Push the DVD in, double-click the installation icon, click twice on continue and you’re done.

I was upset about the 55 minutes it took for upgrading, from the begining to the reboot. Anyway, after that, I got a pleasant surprise. What people was saying about 5 to 10 GB of disk space freed was far from true to me. I got a whooping 20GB! From 30GB to 50GB. A LOT more than what I expected. I believe it was so because of the huge amount of software that I have installed on my computer, and thus removing the PowerPC stuff could free a lot of space.

After I got it installed I was trying to find broken stuff. So far, the following apps were down: istat menu, mailunreadmenu, istumbler, growl and kismac. Let’s get on it:

ISTAT MENU

Installed the beta 2 over it and it’s ok now.

MAILUNREADMENU

The update didn’t work, so I removed it and reinstalled. Working fine.

ISTUMBLER

No way xD

GROWL

It says it is not working, and indeed the prefpane is broken. Anyway, the notifications are 100%, so… who cares?

KISMAC

Passive mode is ok, active is broken. Using AirPort Extreme

Another app peoplo were complaining about was Cord, for me it was working. Updated and so, no problems at all.

Now, let’s talk about the OS. Exposé is damn nice. I was affraid that cleaning up the chaos that the windows were spreaded over would ruin the fun of it. I really liked the way it was. But I really can’t complain about what has been done. Much better than expected. The tags below the windows are a nice touch (although using the meta key in Leopard had the same effect). A brilliant detail is that the minimized windows also appear in exposé, below the others. It is now easy to call them without running to the dock.

The finder preview is cool, I don’t find it that useful, but it is, to say the least, pretty. A much more appreciated feature is the wireless signal strength that is now shown in the menu bar or when you are trying to find a network. Quicktime X is clean, fast and ran pretty well here. I’m not a big fan of it, but I’ll give it a try.

As I find more stuff I’ll post here.

BTW. command+meta+eject puts your mac to sleep. Maybe I’ll unbind the quicksilver shortcut for calling the screensaver.

Primeira coisa, a instalação.

Como era de se esperar, o processo é extremamente simples. Coloque o DVD, clique duas vezes no ícone de instalar, clique em continuar duas vezes e pronto, a atualização começa.

Assustei com o tempo que levou, muito maior do que o esperado. Fiquei aguardando 55 minutos desde o início até o fim da reinicialização após a instalação. Porém, depois disso, uma surpresa agradável. Aquela estória de liberar 5 a 10 GB de disco rígido não funcionou para mim. Foram 20, isso mesmo, vinte GB liberados. Saltei de 30GB livres para 50GB. MUITO mais do que esperava! Acredito que isso seja pelo fato de que eu tenho muita coisa instalada em disco e a remoção dos binários de PowerPC possa ter tido grande influência nesse ponto.

Depois de instalado fui mexendo procurando os problemas que apareceram. Até agora, os seguintes aplicativos deram problema: istat menu, mailunreadmenu, istumbler, growl e kismac. Vamos à eles:

Instalei por cima dele a versão 2 beta. Funcionou que é uma beleza

MAILUNREADMENU

A atualização que ele fez dizia que ia funcionar no Snow Leopard, não funcionou. O que eu tive que fazer foi removê-lo e reinstalar. Pronto.

ISTUMBLER

Esse não deu mesmo xD

GROWL

Diz que não funciona, que tem atualização à caminho. Mas o único problema que encontrei foi no prefpane dele. As notificações em si estão 100%

KISMAC

Não funcionou o modo ativo, o passivo está tranquilo. Usando AirPort Extreme

Um outro aplicativo que a galera diz que não está rodando é o Cord, eu não tive problemas. Ele se atualizou e eu já fiz algumas conexões, sem nenhum problema.

Falando agora do sistema. O exposé ficou bem melhor, eu tinha medo que a organização do antigo caos da distribuição das janelas ficasse ruim. Sinceramente eu me divertia com os padrões que eram gerados quando o recurso era ativado. Mas ficou melhor do que eu esperava. As tags embaixo das janelas mostrando quais são foram uma boa pedida (embora a tecla meta fizesse isso no leopard). Um detalhe brilhante, na minha opinião, é que agora o exposé pode exibir janelas minimizadas. Elas ficam abaixo das expostas, sem a necessidade de recorrer ao Dock.

O preview de arquivos no finder ficou maneiro. Não achei de extrema utilidade, mas é, no mínimo, bonito. Uma alteração mais sutil, porém mais necessária, foi a inclusão de um indicador do sinal de wireless para as conexões encontradas. Por fim, o quicktime X ficou bonito, rápido, limpo e rodou muito bem, inclusive com legendas. Nunca o usei muito, mas pelo visto agora vou começar.

No mais, sempre que tiver alguma novidade vou colocando aqui.

BTW. Descobri que agora tem um atalho para colocar o computador para dormir (command+meta+eject). Talvez até tire o bind que tinha feito para o quicksilver chamar a proteção de tela.
